Special Event - Ponggal Festival (Koolam)

On Progress
View all 12 photos...
Overall i'm feeling so great when someone from other race invite me to join their lunch (vege). Remembering one program I have attend last year.... The program is good but they not invited me (college representative) to take even one cup of copy.... Feel sad Hope this cultural program will be held time by time. Yeahhhhh Proud to be Malaysian.

What Is Koolam
Koolam (in Tamil) is a decorative design drawn using rice powder by female members of the family in front of their home, especially near the threshold. A Kolam is a sort of painted prayer -- a line drawing composed of curved loops, drawn around a grid pattern of dots. They are generally symmetric.

Kolams are thought to bestow prosperity to the homes. For special occasions limestone and red brick powder to contrast are also used. Though kolams are usually done with dry rice flour, for longevity, dilute rice paste or even paints are also used. Modern interpretations have accommodated chalk, and the latest "technology" in kolams are actually vinyl stickers (that defeat the original purpose).

While concentrate on Inai decoration, one representative from PMH (Persatuan Mahasiswa Hindu - Hindu Student Society) call my name.

Representative : Azhar, over here!!!! Come here. I would like to show you something...
Me :
Representative : Our next event is Kabaddi, the Northern Indian game. Act like rugby but it is differ game.
Me : Woila, lets go.
p/s This conversation held at Kolej Tun Razak Hall by using English conversation.

I went there, and see, everyone is ready. For me, it is ordinary, because my hometown is nearby Guthrie Estate. Look like rounders but playing kabaddi you must have a good health and strength. All participant murmuring "kabaddi, kabaddi, kabaddi...... non stop" till the round end. Detail? Read below article...

What Is Kabaddi
Kabaddi or Kabbadi, Kabadi is a team pursuit sport, primarily played in South Asia. Kabaddi is derived from a hindi word meaning holding breath. Kabaddi is used as the chant in the game (see below) in most of the world. However, in Bangladesh this is hadudu, in Nepal Do-Do, in Sri Lanka Guddo, in Malaysia Chado-Guddo and in Indonesia Techib. Hadudu/kabaddi is recognised as the national game of Bangladesh.

The name "Kabaddi" is used in northern India: the game is also known as Chedugudu in the south and Ha-du-du in the east. The game is also known by other names such as: Ha-doo-doo, Hu-tu-tu and Chhu kit kit. It is also played in many other countries including: Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, and Canada.

Ponggal Festival at UTM Skudai
Actually, i have seen lot of advert at my faculty for this event. Remembering everyone will come to Johor Bahru, to take a shot on Kite Festival, I make my own decision, to add this Ponggal Fest as parellel activities. But only me, Rasso and Ayares take a shot together. The organizer quite good to us, even they offer a meal for lunch (vege). Feel sad because can get along till the ponggal end. Got to go to Pasir GUdang to shot on Kite Festival. And again, i will separate my entry.

1. Ponggal Fest - Inai / Mehendi
2. Ponggal Fest - Kabaddi
3. Ponggal Fest - Paanai Alangaram
4. Ponggal Fest - Koolam

See ya!!!

What Is Pongal (Ponggal)
Pongal (பொங்கல் in Tamil) is an Indian festival to give thanks for the harvest. Pongal in Tamil literally means boiling over. It is traditionally celebrated at the time of harvest of crops and hence is a celebration of the prosperity associated with the event.

Pongal is historically a secular festival independent of religion. It is celebrated by all people in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. While Pongal is predominantly a Tamil festival, the same period also marks similar festivals celebrated in several other places under different names. In Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, the harvest festival Sankranthi is celebrated. In northern India, it is called Makar Sankranti. In Maharashtra and Gujarat, it is the date of the annual kite-flying day, Uttarayan. It also coincides with the harvest festival in Punjab and Haryana, known as Lohri.

What Is Mehendi (Inai)
Mehendi, a common shrub is known to have been in use in all parts of the world since time immemorial. The traditional way of painting hand and feet with mehendi is still popular especially among brides. Decorating the bride's hand and feet with the application of henna or mehendi is symbolic of the auspicious occasion. Besides decorating the hands and feet it is a popular dye to colour hair. It is also used as a home remedy for various minor ailments.

In North India, application of mehendi is a common custom. For them this is an auspicious day before the wedding. The application of mehendi is an art that is fascinating and exciting . A combination of geometrical and floral patterns are used in this decorative art.
